13: The Hunger Games

This book was written by Suzanne Collins. She has also written the rest of this series and many other books. This book takes place in dystopian society in the future. All of the rich people are happy, they only achieve this on the backs of a huge amount of people bullied into submission by the capitol. With the start of this book all of the peace the Capitol has put into place will crumble and finally break.

The main characters in this book -cause they do change- Are Peeta, Katniss, and Prim. Prim is Katniss’ sister. She is chosen to go to the games and probably die, I think she is important, because she makes Katniss want to do something with her life (mainly survive to see Prim one more time).  Peeta is a bread maker from district 12- so are Katniss and Prim- who has a crush on Katniss. He is chosen as tribute for the games. At heart he is nice, but one can only be so nice in a poor society like district 12. He once gave Katniss bread because she and her family were starving after her father’s death. Katniss is a head strong girl who can use a bow and arrow. She replaces her sister’s spot in the games to keep her alive. She is also kind of nervous around Peeta because of the whole bread thing.

As Katniss and Peeta head to almost certain doom they train with the only other winner from district 12, Haymitch. When they go into the games Katniss splits away from Peeta only to find that he has decided to work with another group to hunt her down. As the number of contestants starts to dwindle Peeta and katniss work together to survive. As the story goes on Katniss starts to fall for Peeta so that people can send them gifts. She also befriends a girl named Rue who is much younger than her but dies when Rue is ambushed and she gets speared. At the end Peeta is in horrible shape, and they are out of options. As the final confrontation between them and Cato a bulky guy comes to a close they realize that one of them must die to survive. You will need to read the book to see how they get out of this situation.

This book was emotional at the beginning and the end. I wouldn’t recommend this book to any type of person in particular. It was an amazing adventure book. It was all about fighting, surviving, and being able to rely on others.

#12 A Wrinkle in Time

This book was written by Madeleine L’Engle. She has also written the other books the the Wrinkle in Time series, and many other books and series, too. This particular book takes place in the early 21 century, in what you would call a normal town, for example a friendly neighborhood or in my case Bloomington, Indiana. This book is now a movie.

There are three main characters. The most important of them is Meg. She is bullied by most people, and thought of as an odd ball. Another one of the characters is Charles Wallace. He is Megs younger brother. He is also thought of as an odd ball. The last character is a boy named Calvin. He is a jock at school but has a sad life at home in a poor family with a lot of kids. Together these three will have to face IT, an evil entity that destroys everything normal.

On a stormy night, Charles and Meg encounter a strange lady who takes them on an adventure with Calvin. Her names is Mrs. Whatsit, and her friends names are Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which. They show Calvin, Meg, and Charles the universe, and how IT is slowly taking it over and why entities like Mrs. Whatsit decided to fight back against IT. Soon after they reach a planet that is kind of the headquarters for IT. When they land on the planet they find out that Charles and Meg’s dad is on this planet and when they free him they end up losing Charles, who at the moment is the most powerful of them. After they escape Meg is wounded. When she is healed she realizes that she is the only one that can save Charles. As she returns to the planet for the final confrontation she realized that the one thing humans have that IT doesn’t is love. With this in mind she saves Charles and stops IT, possibly permanently.

I enjoyed this book, but I would have enjoyed it more if my parents had recommended it to me. Instead my teacher made me read it. I enjoyed it more, though, than I would have because he – my teacher – is an excellent teacher and an even better producer for our drama club. I would recommend this book to anyone in general.

Throwback Thursday 2: Time Flies

This book was written by Eric Rohmann, he has also written Giant Squid and many other books. The first time I read this book I was Extremely young. He seems to prefer writing children’s books over young adult books. Time Flies has received a Caldecott Honor. The story doesn’t appear in any particular time, but I am assuming it was made for the time period it was published which is 1995.

This book has no words, but the pictures are amazing. The story starts out in a lightning storm with a bird headed into a museum. When the bird reaches the museum you see that the museum has a dinosaur exhibit which the bird goes into. As it enters, it perches on the teeth of a T-Rex. The bird starts to move and the exhibit starts to come alive. At first it’s only a couple dinosaurs at a time, but soon the whole room becomes a Jurassic Ara background with tons of dinosaurs. The bird start to swoop and dive around the dinosaurs-flying and on the ground- and appears to suddenly be confronted with a huge dinosaur. It makes the bird flee, but it doesn’t realize that the T-Rex is behind it. As the bird realizes this it has a staring contest with it-this is the cover of the book- before the T-Rex swallows it. At this point the bird seems to have had enough of this fantasy and the T-Rex and the entire museum go back to normal. As the bird flies out there is a stone pterodactyl with real eyes watching it as it leaves the museum.

This book was very interesting considering the fact that it had no words. I would recommend this to any parent with a young child. The creativity in this book was amazing. I still read it every now and then. I always learn something new from it.
